A man came from Iraq and he was asking about the equivocal verses of the Quran in Medina. Umar رضي الله عنه heard about this and called for this man to be brought to him. The man came and Umar asked him what his name was, the man replied, my name is Abdullah Subay' (عبد الله صبيع), Umar said my name is Abdullah Umar (عبد الله عمر). Then Umar started beating him, he beat him then threw him in the well, then he took him out. This process happened three consecutive times, the man was put into the well.
Do you know what happened after?
The man said, I swear by Allah the disease in my heart is going, I swear by Allah Umar I don't have it anymore.
Then Umar رضي الله عنه let him go!
This is showing those who ask about the equivocal verses have a disease in their hearts and more than that the Qur’an says it also - those who have deflected hearts follow the equivocal!
In Surah Aal-e-Imran Verse 7 it says:
As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.
Later, during the tribulation which took place at the time of Uthmaan's rule رضي الله عنه, when they surrounded his house and they murdered him, during that time those with deflected hearts, the sick people, those who follow the equivocal verses, they invited Subay' to get involved, to join them. They asked Subay' why he doesn't interfere in the matter. Do you know what he said?
Subay' said, No! The good man, the righteous man corrected me, he put me on the straight line, he corrected my perverted dugma to the correct Aqidah!
